The Light Slowed Down Here
Time passed through here,
and the light slowed down a little.
It felt like wind moving through leaves in the afternoon—
silent,
yet deeply present.
I captured that moment in a photograph.
Later,
it became the cover of a package design.
And suddenly I realized:
Some designs are not really “designed.”
They are simply moments
that were gently preserved.
—
I have always been fascinated by light.
Not dramatic light.
But the kind that is about to disappear.
A faint reflection on a wall at dusk.
The soft brightness beside a rainy window.
Komorebi shifting across the ground.
The remaining warmth after incense burns away.
These things are subtle.
So subtle
that without silence,
they cannot be seen.
—
Most of the time,
I am not photographing objects.
I am photographing time.
The trace left behind by a passing moment.
The instant before light disappears.
The invisible distance between air and stillness.
So when I turned this image into packaging,
I added very little.
I only tried to preserve its original breathing space.
Because truly good things
do not always need to be filled.
Sometimes,
emptiness itself is the content.
—
In Eastern aesthetics,
there is a kind of quietness
that is not emptiness,
but balance.
Just enough light.
Just enough ash.
Just enough wind.
Just enough silence.
And perhaps people, too,
only truly encounter themselves
within these small moments.
—
Even now,
when I look at that photograph again,
I still remember the moment I pressed the shutter.
Nothing extraordinary happened.
The light simply slowed down for a while.
And I
just happened to be there.
